Torrential late summer rains spell doom for Hugh's hay harvest, and only radical plant-surgery can save his tomatoes from blight, however the weather has helped mushrooms flourish. Hugh also enters a sheep in the Melpash Agricultural Show.

Now that he has some extra land to work with, Hugh purchases some livestock, prompting he and Angus Carmichael, a local carpenter, to build a fox-proof chicken coop. Hugh also goes scallop hunting, and enters a nettle eating competition.

Hugh summons experts to help deal with his uncooperative livestock, and soon, he feels confident in entering his saddleback, Delia, into the Okehampton Agricultural Show. Hugh also grapples with a serious aphid problem in the polytunnel.

It is summer at River Cottage and the vegetables are thriving, so much so that Hugh decides to enter The Beaminster Horticultural Society's annual competition, with the Tomatillo as his secret ingredient. Hugh also fishes for spider crabs.
