On December 15, 1867, William Logan Rynerson, a member of New Mexico's legislature, shot and mortally wounded John Potts Slough, the chief justice of the territory's supreme court. The events surrounding the death were sensational because they involved two public officials; but more important, Slough's murder seemed to legitimize assassination as a political tactic that flourished in New Mexico over the next fifty years. This study situates the peculiar character of political turmoil in New Mexico within the broad context of violence in American history. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
