Description
In From the other side, Chantal Akerman shifts her focus between the border towns of Agua Prieta, Sonora, where people from all over Mexico wait, in limbo, before crossing over into the United States, and the cross-border town of Douglas, Arizona.
Description
Inspired by her love of William Faulkner and James Baldwin, renowned director Chantal Akerman had planned to produce a meditation on the American South. However, just days before she was to begin filming, James Byrd, Jr. was murdered in Jasper, Texas. A black family man, Byrd has been severely beaten by three white men, chained to their truck, and dragged three miles through predominately black parts of the county. Akerman documents the community's reaction to the hate crime before retracing the route of the murder. Includes interviews with residents -- black and white -- of Jasper, Texas where the events took place.
