Description
When Twyla Tharp's The Catherine Wheel premiered on Broadway, it was described by Arlene Croce -- dance critic for The New Yorker magazine -- as "A major event in our theater," with "dancing of astonishing beauty and power." It was then completely refashioned by Tharp especially for television, with computer-generated figures, shadow-play, and reverse action - creating a wholly separate video version that has also met with overwhelming praise. The work is set to an original score written and performed by David Byrne of Talking Heads, and grew out of Tharp's fascination with Saint Catherine, the 4th-century martyr who was condemned to die on a spiked wheel.
