Description
Based on actual WWII events, the film is set in December 1944 near Malmedy, Belgium, when advancing German troops kill over 70 unarmed American prisoners of war, an event known as the Malmedy Massacre. The four men who manage to escape into the Ardennes are a cross section of war-movie archetypes: a tough-talking sergeant; a devout, soft-spoken sharpshooter; a wisecracking medic from Brooklyn; and a blundering Cajun country boy. When a stranded R.A.F. pilot drops in by parachute, the stakes are raised: the Brit is in possession of German military intelligence that could save thousands of American lives. With a single rifle among them, no food, and a strained camaraderie, this tiny band must take on the unforgiving winter and a forest filled with enemy troops to fight their way back to Allied lines. An old-fashioned war picture, unambivalent in its portrait of war as a necessity and the heroism of self-sacrifice.
