Description
An epidemic of violence is sweeping the country: musicians are being murdered onstage in the middle of their sets by members of their audience. Are these random copycat killings, or is something more sinister at work? Has music itself become corrupted in a culture where everything is available, everybody is an artist, and attention spans have dwindled to nothing? With its cast of ambitious bands, yearning fans, and enigmatic killers, Destroy All Monsters tells a haunted and romantic story of overdue endings and unlikely beginnings that will resonate with anybody who's ever loved rock and roll.Like a classic vinyl single, this novel is made up of two sides: side A, the "hit" is "My Dark Ages," the story of Xenie, a young woman repulsed by the violence of the epidemic but drawn deeper into its mysteries. After a shooting in the town of Arcadia, a club organizes a tribute concert for the victims, and Xenie becomes entangled withthe only band willing to preform: an awkward group of boys hiding their own desperate secrets. Full of ghostly murmurs and insistent echoes, "My Dark Ages" is a love song for a dying world. The darker more unconventional B side, "Kill City," features familiar characters in asurprising roles, and burrows deeper into the methods and motivations of the killers. Following an alternative history, it focuses on a memorial service for a slain singer that culminates in a dramatic all-night bender filled with perilous chases and musical reveries and traces the many paths to overcoming loss.
