Description
Martha Washington traveled great distances to join her husband, George Washington, at military headquarters during the America revolution. She spent harsh winters at Army camps, where she organized women's sewing groups to mend uniforms. In 1789, she became the first woman to hold the position of first lady of the United States. She was a model of dignity and grace, and set a high standard for other first ladies.
