Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison is back, and is assigned the murder of a young black woman. Among her many problems are the pressure for a quick resolution to avoid charges of racism, the political disapproval of her colleagues and the reappearance of a former lover.

The story of a 21st century city run by a "super trustee" and his collaborators who live in a paradise-like garden. Workers are totally enslaved by machines and condemned to live underground. In the midst of this misery, a young woman, Maria, arises and attempts to inspire the workers to throw off their oppressors.

Soames is concerned about his marriage and hires Bosinney to build a country house at Robin Hill for Irene, bringing the couple together and they soon fall in love.

Irene and Bosinney plan to run away together and Soames is furious that the project is overspending again and decides to sue Bosinney.

1899 - bankrupt after gambling losses Dartie steals Winifred's pearls, and threatens to shoot her when confronted. He leaves. She starts divorce proceedings.
